Uno de los tratados clásicos data de 1936 realizado por Richard E. Blackwelder "Morphology of the coleopterous family Staphylinidae", nos hace un formidable alcance de la morfología de la familia a través de comparación de las diversas estructuras tanto externas e internas en las más variadas Subfamilias y tribus que forman parte de esta.

El más moderno tratado de morfología en la familia corresponde a Shun-Ichiro Naomi, cuyo trabajo publicado en una serie de 11 partes entre (1987-1990), tratando en cada uno de ellos los diferentes tagmas corporales, realizando una discusión de los nombres acuñados a las estructuras e ilustrando maravillosamente cada una de las estructuras en forma comparada entre los miembros de cada subfamilia estudiados y grupos afines.
